TERRE HAUTE – One of the goals Avon coach Jennifer Jones laid out for Orioles was to be competitive in the Terre Haute South Braves’ Bash.
The Orioles, after suffering a 10-3 defeat to defending Class 3A state champion New Palestine earlier this week, weren’t able to bounce back, falling to Roncalli 6-3 in Game 1 of the Braves’ Bash.
The Rebels scored all of their runs in the first five innings and staved off the Oriole comeback in the seventh to keep Avon winless.
Avon’s rally started with a lead-off single to center field from Brooklyn McCord. A batter later, Zoe Frossard brought her home with a dinger to right field to cut the deficit to four. Shelby Ellwanger cut it to three with a solo shot over the center-field wall, giving the Orioles (0-2) life with no outs.
Yet, that life was short lived as two straight groundouts to the second baseman and lineout to first ended the Oriole comeback attempt.
Sidney Jones was the only Oriole with multiple hits on Friday, going 2-for-2 at the plate. Madyson Day rounded out the Oriole hitting with a single.
Hayden Batton and Karli Steward split time in the circle, combining for four strikeouts.
Avon returns to Terre Haute South today for two games against Casey-Westfield High School out of Illinois and Northview. Games are set to start at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
