SPEEDWAY — Dog Tracks Resort at 2101 Cunningham Road, Ste. A, Speedway, aims to keep both its customers and their dogs happy by offering a flexible boarding option.
Owner Chris Gerth said Dog Tracks Resort, which opened May 14, mainly provides boarding and daycare for dogs, with a future goal of adding training and grooming, as well as space for boarding cats.
One of the main things that makes his business different, Gerth said, is that he’ll work with customers on when they can pick up and drop off their dogs.
“We do have regular hours, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” he said. “But we pride ourselves in that our customers can … have us available 24/7, 365, including holidays, to pick up and drop off their dog. Our thought is that if your plane runs late, you get stuck in traffic, or you’re simply having fun with your family, don’t rush, we’ll be here for you.”
Gerth said his resort features an indoor daycare center, and outdoor area, and 12 suites for housing the dogs.
“We have two sets of movable walls (in the indoor daycare center),” he said. “If we need to separate dogs and have a smaller area or bigger area, that’s what we do.”
For the outdoor area, Gerth said there are two areas for the dogs to be kept in, in case certain dogs need to be separated.
“Outdoors, we plan on building some permanent shade areas as well as different levels so they can jump up and play king of the mountain,” he said. “All the fencing is eight feet on the exterior. Then we put up the mesh for privacy … so the neighbors don’t have to see what we’re doing and we don’t have to see what the neighbors are doing.”
As for the suites, Gerth said he feels that’s more of an appropriate name.
“I don’t like to call them kennels because they’re 5 feet by 10 feet,” he said. “We just started installation of our televisions. If we have really small dogs, sometimes the owners want them put in the crate at night.”
He said the reason for installing televisions is that some dogs feel more comfortable with the background noise.
“I did some research and I found out that a lot of people leave a radio on or the television on,” he said. “Right now, we leave a radio on all the time.”
Gerth said the flooring is waterproof, as well as the walls in each suite, up to three feet.
He said one of the most important aspects of his job is keeping his business clean, while also being environmentally friendly.
“We have a waste tank, so all the dog waste goes into this waste tank and it’s treated with a chemical,” Gerth said. “Once it gets sucked out, it can be reused as compost for non-edible vegetation. We don’t use any plastic bags and we don’t put anything in the garbage — there’s no dog waste in the garbage.”
He added that the constant cleaning and the waste tank help combat the smells that might be associated with an operation like this.
“First of all, I don’t want to smell it,” he said. “Second of all, my neighbors don’t want to smell it. (That’s why) we’re always constantly cleaning up dog waste.”
Along with catering to his customers’ schedules, Gerth said he also provides updates on how people’s pets are doing.
“We also do a thing called pUpdates,” he said. “We send text messages with pictures of their dogs to the customers. It’s a huge hit. We let them know who they played with and anything that’s kind of standing out.”
Gerth said he also likes to be very open with what goes on in his business.
“When you come up to the door, you can see inside the fence area or you can look through the windows and see what’s going on,” he said. “Of all the tours I did with all the other facilities — we discretely researched other facilities — they would simply take your dog and take them back and close the door. I wanted an open facility where people could come in and see what’s going on.”
Gerth said he also wants to be present in the community and sponsors Beacon of Hope and the Speedway Animal Rescue.
As for the future, Gerth said he plans to add a space for boarding cats, dog training, and grooming.
