ALDI opens new Plainfield store

PLAINFIELD —

ALDI, a well-known discount grocer, will open its Plainfield store at 2382 E. Main St. on Oct. 5.

The last day of operation for the 2481 E. Main St. store, which the new store is replacing, will be Oct. 4.

“We are pleased to showcase the new look of ALDI with this updated store in Plainfield and continue to help customers stretch their dollars,” Laura Bauer, Greenwood division vice president for ALDI, said in a press release. “As important as price is, there’s only one way to attract and keep shoppers: You have to have quality products. When people try our ALDI exclusive brands, they are excited by the savings and impressed by the quality.”

There will be a ribbon cutting event at 8:45 a.m. Oct. 5 and the official public opening at 9 a.m. There will also be product sampling and a chance to enter to win a patio heater and other prizes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

With higher ceilings, improved natural lighting, and environmentally friendly building materials — such as recycled materials and energy-saving refrigeration and light bulbs — the store will offer customers a simple and easy-to-navigate shopping experience.

ALDI challenges customers to switch from national brands to its brands and save up to 50 percent on more than 1,400 items that the store carries. ALDI stands behind its products with a guarantee that if for any reason a customer is not 100 percent satisfied with a food product, ALDI will replace the product and refund the customer’s money.

ALDI eliminates overhead costs by offering smart practices, such as a cart rental system through which shoppers insert a quarter to release a cart and receive the quarter back upon the cart’s return. Other cost-saving practices include a smaller store footprint, open carton displays, and encouragement of customers to bring their own shopping bags.

The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. ALDI accepts cash, debit, and EBT cards.

A grocery retailer that has grown without merger or acquisition, ALDI opened 75 stores in the United States in 2011 and plans to open more than 80 in 2012. ALDI has more than 1,200 stores in 32 states.
