Detectives arrest a man for an early morning murder

INDIANAPOLIS — Detectives arrest 25-year-old Devin Brookins of Indianapolis on a preliminary charge of murder.  The suspect is accused of shooting and killing 34-year-old Michael Willoughby of Indianapolis earlier Saturday morning in the 1200 block of South Girls School Road (Sully’s Bar & Grill).

At approximately 3:25 am, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were sent to the 1200 block of South Girls School Road reference a 9-1-1 call indicating that there was a fight in progress outside the bar.  As officers were responding, 9-1-1 operators received additional calls indicating gunshots were being fired outside the bar.

When officers arrived, they found Michael Willoughby in the parking lot of the bar unresponsive because of a gunshot wound.  EMS personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased a short time later.  Detectives were later told that a group of individuals, including the suspect and victim, were engaged in a fight outside the bar and as they fought someone started shooting.  Detectives believe that the suspect and the victim along with several others had been involved in an earlier fight inside the bar and the suspect, along with his friends, were removed from the bar by the bar’s security.

Detectives received a tip, from the community, that the suspect would surrender himself to police at Harbor Christian Church located in the 900 E. 25th Street. The suspect turned himself into Violent Crimes Detectives a short time later and was taken to IMPD Headquarters for questioning.   Detectives interviewed and subsequently arrested the suspect on a preliminary charge of murder.  The suspect was taken to the Arrestee Processing Center for processing.  The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the facts of the case and make a final chagrining decision in the coming days.  The suspect’s booking photo is not being released due to on-going nature of the investigation.  An update to the media advisory will include the suspect’s booking photo when detectives conclude enough of their investigation that it can be released.
