The Ben Davis University High School graduating class of 2014 held their final assembly as students on Saturday for commencement ceremonies. High school diplomas were not the only accomplishments granted that day. The vast majority of seniors earned their diploma along with an associate’s degree or college certificate from Vincennes University.
BDUHS Student Body President Sidney Shaffer started off the graduation speeches by saluting her fellow classmates. She said she has enjoyed her role as student body president and likens it to the presidency of the United States of America.
“I was elected by the people and for the people,” Shaffer said. “And my United States of America was Ben Davis University High School.”
She said in her capacity of student body president she was able to get to know the many stories of her fellow students.
“I’ve been truly blessed,” she said. “It’s been an honor to serve you and you will forever be a fond chapter in my book of life.”
Senior Class President Shozaf Zaidi brought humor to his speech as he reflected on their time together as classmates at BDUHS.
“First, let me take a selfie,” he said.
He thanked those in his life who believed in him – especially his mother.
“Kevin Durant said it best when he said, ‘Mom you’re the real MVP,’” Zaidi said. “We finally made it. This is the best day of our lives.”
He reflected on each year together highlight pop culture which resonated with his fellow classmates.
“Our junior year came to be known as the Instagram and duck lips year,” he said. “And the summer before out senior year it was twerking. That was an unforgettable summer.”
He ended his speech by singing words from the Paramore song “Ain’t It Fun.”
“Don’t go crying to your mama ‘cause you’re on your own in the real world,” he sang.
