More than 175 FedEx employees volunteered Monday at Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana as a part of FedEx Cares Week.
Paula Bosler, corporate communications adviser for FedEx, said FedEx Cares Week takes place annually.
“This is the ninth year for our annual FedEx Cares Week,” she said. “It’s a program that FedEx employees from around the world participate in a variety of projects in their local cities. We let each local city in the U.S. or international market decides what type of program they would like to participate in.”
Bosler said the volunteers worked from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“A majority of the volunteers will work on the BackSacks line with the goal of producing (about) 5,000 BackSacks on Monday,” she said. “BackSacks are filled with nutritious food items given to over 10,000 children at 223 schools in 21 Indiana counties each Friday during the school year, providing meals and snacks for the entire weekend.”
Bosler said volunteers also helped in the production line, sorting and inspecting donated food.
In addition to helping out onsite at Gleaners, nearly 40 volunteers helped set up and staff a mobile food pantry at First Christian Church in Greensburg.
Bosler said volunteering with Gleaners goes hand in hand with Hunger Action Month.
“September is Hunger Action Month, so across the country we have these volunteer programs (in) over 40 U.S. cities and in several international locations,” she said. “We do have a lot of hunger programs that we’re doing in the U.S. and globally. Part of that is to help support this Hunger Action Month.”
She said FedEx Cares also serves as a kickoff for the company’s United Way campaign.
“As part of FedEx Cares Week and all of these volunteer programs, it serves as a formal kickoff for the company’s annual United Way volunteering campaign,” Bosler said. “It gives us and our employees an opportunity to give back. Primarily, why we do this each year, is to provide an opportunity to give back to the community where they work and live.”
Jessica Shive, volunteer coordinator at Gleaners, said FedEx is a great company to work with.
“Here at Gleaners we love having FedEx come out,” she said. “Not only do they do the FedEx Day of Caring, but we have groups coming out all throughout the year. We have a group that does the mobile pantry twice a month, so they get so much accomplished and they’re a great community partner. I know we’ve had groups come in that say, ‘We want to be like FedEx.’ We love the day when they come out and they get a ton done.”
Bosler said FedEx was honored as Gleaners Corporate Volunteer of the Year in 2012 for its commitment to Gleaners’ mission.
