Teen brothers arrested for murder of Iraq vet

INDIANAPOLIS — Friday morning, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) arrested two teen brothers in connection with a fatal shooting Wednesday.

The shooting took place shortly before 4 p.m. at Wyckford Commons apartments near West 10th Street and North Girls School Road.

Police were called to the 900 block of Wyckford Drive at 3:54 p.m. where the victim was confirmed dead at the scene.

IMPD Homicide detectives later identified the victim as Sgt. First Class James Vester, 32, of Lizton. Vester leaves behind a wife and young son.

According to information from the IMPD, detectives from the IMPD Homicide Branch, Robbery Unit, Violent Crimes Unit, the United States Marshall Service, and officers from the East District arrested Tryon Kincade, 19, and Tyshaune Kincade, 18. The brothers were preliminarily charged with murder and robbery for their alleged involvement in Vester’s homicide.

The IMPD notes that because of the joint effort of the investigation units, the quick capture and arrest of the individuals was possible.

At this time, police are not releasing photos of the suspects because it is still an ongoing investigation.

According to IMPD Sgt. Lori Himmel, Vester was in the area to inquire about the purchase of an iPad he had found on Craigslist. When the victim met with the suspects, shots were then fired.

Vester served a tour of duty in Iraq from 2005 to ‘06 and worked as a diesel mechanic for the Indiana National Guard. He was also a member of the Ceremonial Unit, which honors those who died in service.

Vester’s wife Jamie started a Facebook page to honor her husband called “In Memory of Jim,” and an online fundraising page has been started on the website www.youcaring.com. The page titled “Love and Support for Jamie and Gavin” has a fundraising goal of $50,000 and as of Friday morning, had raised a little more than $38,000.

Vester’s wife also released a statement that reads: “We are all so thankful for the kind words, actions, and prayers that have been sent our way. The outpour of love, support, and monetary donations are beyond expectations. I want to send a special thank you to all of the military family that have been so helpful. Jim was loved by so many people. He was the best husband I could have ever asked for. He would do anything for anyone at any time. Gavin will always know of and love ‘dada.’ Thank you everyone for your condolences.”

Detectives request that anyone with further information about the incident call IMPD homicide at 327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS (8477). Callers can also text “INDYCS” plus tip information to 274627 (CRIMES).
