Ballard closes city government today

Westside Flyer

---- — Mayor Greg Ballard announced yesterday the closing of City-County Government, except for essential personnel, today due to dangerously cold temperatures. He also ordered a two-hour delay for government opening on Wednesday.

Marion County Circuit Court Judge Louis Rosenberg is ordering the closure of Marion County Superior and Circuit courts today as well.

“It is just not safe for our employees or people needing to do business with our offices to have to wait for a bus or walk blocks to this building from a parking lot,” Ballard said in a press release. “I encourage people to prepare for the extreme temperatures and local organizations to take appropriate steps on Tuesday and Wednesday morning to minimize the time people may be exposed to the elements.”

City officials are also taking these additional steps due to the dangerous cold:

• Shelter space is available for people who lose power or heat during this weather event. Persons needing shelter information should call 2-1-1 or the IMPD non-emergency number at 327-3811.

• Overflow shelters, including Horizon House, remain available to serve the homeless population.

• Residents are encouraged to check on their neighbors, particularly senior citizens and the disabled.

• Pet owners should ensure their outdoor animals have adequate shelter and access to non-frozen water.

• Ballard is maintaining the county’s travel status at watch (orange) level. Motorists should only drive if necessary, and have an emergency kit in their cars in case they become stranded.

• The Department of Public Works has suspended trash pickup through Wednesday. Residents with trash pickup on the days missed will be able to place double the amount of trash for collection next week.

• IndyGo will be running on its normal schedule tomorrow. People who utilize public transportation are urged to dress appropriately while waiting for their bus.
