Warriors ready to hit the links

The Covenant Christian Warriors boys’ golf squad are coming off of a dismal 2012 campaign that was less than impressive from a team standpoint, winning just four of its 13 meets. Add to that the fact that they lost their No. 1 and No. 3 golfers to graduation, and 2013 may seem like a daunting task.

But the youth movement taking place for Donnie Fishburn and his golf team has given him a glass-half-full outlook on a bright future for Covenant Christian.

“Being that we don’t have any seniors, I expect our juniors to step up as leaders for the next two years,” Fishburn said. “By the end of these next two years, I have no doubt we can close that gap on the other schools and compete. So I’ve placed a big emphasis on that this year.”

It was not all that bad for the Warriors last season. They sent a golfer to regionals and fell one stroke short of sending another.

The light at the end of the tunnel though can be seen when looking at the youth on the squad. All four of the Warriors’ returning golfers are juniors and sophomores with some quality experience from last season already under their belts heading into this season. Junior John Angermeier and sophomore Daniel Eanes will be the top two golfers leading the way for the Warriors.

“Angermeier was our No. 2 golfer last season and he will be our No. 1 golfer this season,” Fishburn said. “He shoots around an 80. That’s about where I expect him to start while working toward getting better and getting lower. Eanes shoots around a 90. He’s a bogey golfer right now with the ability to go really low throughout the season moving forward.”

The Warriors’ team goals are centered on individual progress and success. There’s a team atmosphere and plenty of positive chemistry. For Fishburn and the Warriors, there is no other way they would rather approach this 2013 campaign.
