Footlite to audition for 'La Cage Aux Follles'

Footlite Musicals has announced open auditions for “La Cage Aux Folles,” the third mainstage production of its 2013-14 season.

Auditions are 7 to 10 p.m. Dec. 1 and 2 at the Hedback Community Theater, 1847 N. Alabama St. Callbacks will be held 7 p.m. Dec. 4.

Auditioners are asked to prepare a verse and a chorus from a Broadway show (nothing from this show). An accompanist will be provided. Bring sheet music in the correct key. Dress to impress at the auditions, but bring clothes and shoes you can move in for the dance audition (tap shoes if available). Individuals are asked to bring a complete list of their conflicts and to be prepared to read from the script.

If you are called back for one of the Les Cagelles or Albin, plan to attend dressed “in character.”

Rehearsals for “La Cage” will begin in January. Production dates are March 7-9, 13-16, and 20-23.

Written by Harvey Feinstein, with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, “La Cage” is based on a French play by Jean Poiret.

The musical’s plot centers on Georges and Albin, two Frenchmen partnered for better or worse for 20 years of unwedded bliss, They both get a bit of both when Georges’ son (fathered during a one-night fling) announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, right-wing politician.

Further complicating the situation is the “family business,” a drag nightclub where Albin is the “star” performer Zaza. Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as “normal” when he meets the family of the bride-to-be. But Albin has other plans.
