Singers offer help to Wheeler Mission

Indiana natives and multi-Grammy-winners Bill and Gloria Gaither joined forces with Wheeler Mission in Indianapolis this past spring to create a six-month partnership, culminating in a Christmas extravaganza on Nov. 30 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Wheeler Mission and the Gaither organization hope to make a significant difference in providing needed support and a brighter future for the homeless in Central Indiana, where approximately 1,600 people are homeless on any given night.

Bill Gaither, who has a long history of leadership and investment in his home state, visited Wheeler Mission’s Shelter for Men several months ago, then returned a few weeks later to serve meals, tour the facilities, and interact with people who are struggling with homelessness. He also learned more about other services Wheeler is providing to help the downtrodden get back on their feet again.

The Gaither Homecoming Christmas Extravaganza will be a celebration of this community’s generosity, and of the hope that Wheeler Mission is sharing with people who need it most. The concert features a musical line-up of artists singing inspirational and Christmas favorites. The roster of artists includes: Bill and Gloria Gaither, The Gaither Vocal Band (David Phelps, Mark Lowry, Wes Hampton, and Bill Gaither), The Isaacs, Buddy Greene, The Martins, Angie Primm, Charlotte Ritchie, Carl Erskine, and many others, plus Indy’s own Indianapolis Children’s Choir and a 1,600-voice chorale from Greater Indianapolis churches, schools, and universities.

This fundraising concept transcends your average benefit concert, and the Gaithers hope this will be the beginning of a movement, across Indiana and beyond, to begin meeting both the immediate and the deeper needs of the city’s homeless community.

“This night is going to be very special. But most importantly, I want to send the homeless in this city a message,” Gaither said in a press release. “I want them to know there are a whole lot of people who care. We are all human beings who need support from time to time, and these folks need our support now.”

Tickets to the Gaither Homecoming Christmas Spectacular are available at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse box office, online at www.gaither.com, or by phone at (800) 745-3000. Group orders of 15 or more receive two free tickets. For group tickets call (800) 965-9324 or go to www.iTickets.com for details.
