Main Street in Speedway will be loud and proud for the seventh consecutive year when the annual Rockin’ on Main Street event runs from 5 to 11 p.m. this Friday.
The family-friendly event will feature live music from Speedway band “The Party” as well as locally popular “Zannado.” The event and parking are free. There are no outside food items or drinks allowed, but there will be items for purchase at the event and a bar.
Catering will be provided by Dawson’s on Main and children’s games will be offered from 5 to 7 p.m.
Connie Harris, executive director of the Speedway Chamber of Commerce, said that originally, the hope was just to add events to showcase the Main Street stretch of Speedway.
“We wanted people to start thinking of it as a destination, not just the Indianapolis Motor Speedway,” she said, “and it started from there. The first year we had terrible weather, but we’ve hung on.”
After starting as a 21 and older event, it quickly expanded to include all ages and Harris says the event has grown each year, now bringing in more than a thousand people.
“People are always here during the week, so we do get people from the track, but it’s turned into a Westside, Brownsburg, Avon, Speedway, and Clermont evening,” she said.
Harris also said she expects the event to flourish this year, as the musical acts come highly recommended.
“(Zannado) is a local popular dancing ban,” she said. “We had a lot of requests to hire them. We just want to pull in local people. The fire department will have a table there, a local girl scout troop puts on games, and we’ll have a small zip line.”
She said the event is scheduled for Carb Day, which is annually the Friday before the Indianapolis 500, as the goal is to keep people in Speedway throughout the day, rather than have them go their separate ways after events at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are finished for the day.
