— The Ben Davis Giants girls’ track team took part in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference track meet last Friday night.
Ben Davis (90.5) finished the night fourth behind Carmel (111), Terre Haute North (109 points) and Warren Central (96 points).
The Giants were unable to close in on the top two teams — Carmel and Terre Haute North — during the final few events leaving the Greyhounds and Patriots to battle at the top for the win.
With the conference title on the line in the final event (4x400) and a tie at the top of the leader board both teams raced with it all on the line. In a photo finish, the Greyhounds held on to win.
The Giants were unable to earn any individual victories on the night but placed second and third in a few events.
Junior Devyn Vandever placed third in the 300 hurdles (48.16).
Senior Alis Marrero took second in the high jump (5-06). Maya Caudle finished second in the 100 (12.86), running the same time in qualifications and the finals.
The Giants were able to take home one relay victory on the night. The 4x100 team took first in a time of 49.11. They narrowly held on to beat Warren Central.
With the event finished and a fourth-place finish under their belt, Ben Davis coach Alicia Wallace had high praise for her 4x100 team.
“I ran two freshmen,” Wallace said. “So the 4x100 was definitely the best part on the night.”
But Wallace pointed out where the team could use the most improvements as the Giants head into sectional action in the next few weeks.
“We’ve got to step it up in the field events,” Wallace said. “We had a lot of people who no-heighted in pole vault so we need to step it up.”
