WFYI Public Media honors its volunteers

INDIANAPOLIS — For one day each spring, WFYI Public Media commemorates the spirit of volunteerism on which it was founded 43 years ago, with its annual Volunteer Luncheon and Awards Program.

This year’s celebration was April 4 in WFYI’s Ruben Community Room. The luncheon theme was “Hats Off to Our Volunteers,” and the table décor featured handmade hats and miniature top hats brimming with candy treats.

Julie Davis, a civic leader and chair of WFYI’s board of directors, spoke about the personal rewards of serving as a community volunteer. During the awards portion of the program, WFYI Public Media recognized the efforts of more than 60 of its dedicated volunteers.

WFYI’s Ardath Y. Burkhart Award was created to honor an individual who serves as a motivation to others and encourages them to achieve great things. The award is named in honor of the remarkable woman who organized a door-to-door campaign in the late ’60s to raise the funds needed to launch WFYI Public Television. This year’s recipient is Andy Peralta. As chair of WFYI’s Volunteer Relations Committee and a member of the Community Relations Committee, Peralta has assisted with a variety of WFYI events through the years, and has worked diligently to help recruit new station volunteers.

Karine Huys  of Cartersburg was presented with WFYI’s 2012 Martha Sterrett Service Award. Named in honor of Martha Sterrett, a devoted WFYI volunteer who passed away in 1988, the award was established to recognize a “worker bee” volunteer who gives a generous number of hours and demonstrates leadership, education, service, and outstanding commitment to WFYI Public Media. As a dedicated member of WFYI’s volunteer force, Huys shares her leadership skills by assisting with check-in and volunteer assignments at station events; assisting as a TV pledge supervisor; and by serving on WFYI’s Volunteer Relations Committee.
