---- — On Monday, several central Indiana businesses were the target of multi-county police raids.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is the lead agency in the investigation, but information is scarce at this time.

“All I can do is confirm that there were a number of search warrants executed involving an investigation,” Peg McLeish, communications director at the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, said. “But I cannot confirm location or business name.”

Various news outlets reported the investigation was linked to restaurants in the El Rodeo franchise. There are about 20 El Rodeo restaurants that operate in central Indiana, including an Avon location at 8128 E. U.S. 36.

According to employees at that location on Wednesday, the Avon El Rodeo was closed on Monday, but was not raided. It reopened on Tuesday. It is possible that 10 or more restaurants were subject to the raids.

The operation was conducted in Marion, Tippecanoe, and Wayne counties.

“The investigation involved the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and the Tippecanoe Prosecutor’s Office,” McLeish said. “The State Police assisted in executing search warrants.”

According to several news reports, police at the restaurants took cash registers and boxes full of documents to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. Several news agencies were able to confirm the investigators were looking into evidence of possible money laundering and failure to pay sales taxes.

McLeish said there are no plans to release any other information at this time.
