Ben Davis soccer teams exit early in Marion County tourney

(Continued)

Rolinson entered the game knowing some of the Decatur upperclassmen and some of their methods. But that knowledge wasn’t enough to stop Logan Marr and his three breakaway goals.

The loss came as a surprise to Rolinson. As well prepared as the Giants were, Decatur just wanted it more.

“They did exactly what we thought they were going to do to a tee, and individually they outplayed us,” Rolinson said. “That night their tactics as a team took us out of our element and made us pay for it.”

If anything, Rolinson hopes the loss will fire his team up before they head to sectionals tomorrow against Brebeuf.

“Hopefully, it’s a nice wake-up call for them the week before sectionals start and to come out, get refocused, and come out hard Wednesday against Brebeuf.”

Girls

The Ben Davis girls’ soccer team also lost in the first round of the Marion County Tournament. Franklin Central got the better of them, 1-0, after a first half goal from Emma Myers.

“We played hard, we just technically didn’t play one of our best games,” Ben Davis coach Sean Bosley said.

Missed passes, bad breaks on balls, and missed opportunities on breakaways were the key differences in the game. Bosley said they just weren’t sharp enough.

Yet, the only goal of the game came when the Giants could not have done anything differently. Myers, on a free kick, dropped a well-placed rainbow shot over a wall of defenders and into the back of the net.

“The girl who kicked it was able to put it right over the top of the keeper’s head,” Bosley said. “We had a wall set up and we defended it as best we could, but it was just a beautiful strike.”

The free kick was set up after a foul was called right in front of the Ben Davis bench. With such a great view, it was a controversial call at most to Bosley.

“It was right in front of me and when he blew his whistle I literally looked up and was like, ‘Really? That’s a foul?’ But the referee called it,” he said.

Bosely said the Giants have played better as of late and look to secure just their second win of the season as they head into sectionals. Ben Davis plays Thursday against Pike in the first round.
