Avon took 10 corner kicks to the Giants’ two, giving the Orioles a definitive advantage in attempts on goal.
In the second half, Ben Davis struggled to mount an organized attack. The Giants attempted eight shots, but never seriously challenged Avon keeper Tyler Shanahan. The sophomore saved four shots and earned a shutout.
Kleyn, meanwhile, added his second goal in the 51st minute for a 3-0 lead.
“He had a nice game tonight, with two goals and the assist,” Schmidt said.
Rolinson, meanwhile, said his team’s mental mistakes contributed to Kleyn’s success. The Giants’ defenders gave Kleyn too much space.
“Avon’s a quality program,” Rolinson said, citing the Orioles’ No. 4 ranking. “We hung with them for 20 minutes till we ran out of gas. As the season builds, we’re going to improve on this.”
