Orioles win Westside Classic over Giants

PLAINFIELD — Avon junior forward Jordan Kleyn was visibly frustrated in the 32nd minute of Saturday’s Westside Classic championship match with Ben Davis after he could not put his shot on frame.

Kleyn quickly redeemed himself as he assisted on Avon’s first goal in the 38th minute and scored the Orioles’ second goal of the match two minutes later as Ben Davis surrendered two scores in the final three minutes of the first half.

The Giants could not rally, and Avon won, 3-0.

Ben Davis coach Andrew Rolinson said that second goal was demoralizing to his team.

“I think the second goal took a huge impact,” he said. “It took a lot of wind out. Our boys are tired. We had a hard-fought match this morning with Covenant Christian. Fatigue set in. We sat back instead of trying to take it to them.”

Rolinson added that his Giants controlled the game for the first 20 minutes, but they didn’t convert good opportunities.

Kleyn’s speed set up Avon’s first goal as he outraced Ben Davis senior Luis Flores to a loose ball in Avon’s attacking third. Giants goalkeeper Jenson Kemple committed to Kleyn, and his pass across the face of goal found teammate Quinton Bridegroom, who buried the shot.

Avon coach Phil Schmidt praised Kleyn’s selflessness.

“Jordan made a really nice play there,” Schmidt said. “The greatest thing about Jordan is [he’s] a great team player. He’s a very talented kid. Yeah, his speed his electric, but he’s really a great teammate.”

Kleyn scored with less than a minute ago on Avon’s seventh corner kick. Standing about 10 yards from goal at the near post, Orioles midfielder Michael Russello sent the ball into the air toward the back post. Kleyn won the ball and his header doubled the Orioles’ lead.
