The Ben Davis boys’ swimming and diving team wrapped up its season a couple of weeks ago after an enjoyable season.
With only two seniors on the squad, the young Giants earned valuable experience while having a good time.
“It was a lot of fun,” Ben Davis coach George Fastrich said. “The team meshed really well this year and we look at them meshing better in the next couple of years.”
Senior Cole Crouch ended his swimming career at state where he finished 17th in the 50 free with a time of 21.84. Crouch made state as a junior in the same event and finished 16th there.
“It was disappointing that he didn’t make it back in the finals, but I wasn’t upset,” Fastrich said. “For him and I both, it was kind of a disappointment he didn’t make it back into the top 16, but we thought he had a really good swim.”
Crouch will continue his swimming career at Wabash College next season but Fastrich said he’ll miss what he brought to the team.
“He always led by example and did a good job motivating the other kids,” he said. “He was more of an action-type person when it came to a lot of stuff as opposed to the captain who yelled and screamed at the other kids.”
A season highlight for Ben Davis was the sixth-place finish at the county meet between 15 teams.
“It was the highest placing in about 10 or 15 years,” Fastrich said.
Ben Davis finished fifth at the sectional and Fastrich said he was happy with the season, considering the youth.
“We have a really young team,” he said. “We graduate two seniors this year and we have a couple of kids coming up through the ranks that will be adding some speed the next couple years.”
