Bridge club works to keep minds alert

The West Side Bridge Club brings people of all ages to Indianapolis to play bridge and sharpen their minds.

The club was started about 13 years ago by Shirley and Bobby Russell and Tracy and Carolyn Clayton, all of whom are from Hendricks County.

“We play bridge socially and we wanted to get a bridge club started on the west side,” Carolyn Clayton said. “We started in Clermont at the Clermont Lions Club for a while and then moved here.”

The club now meets at 7 p.m. each Tuesday at the Wayne Township Fire Administration Building, 700 N. High School Road. Players of all levels and experience are welcome.

“We have people coming from the south side, from the north side, a lot of people from Hendricks County and the west side of Indianapolis,” Shirley Russell said. “We have all levels of players. It’s kind of a point system — some people have 10 points and some have 5,000 points.”

Brad Bartol, director of the game, says the reward at the end is the master points. There are people with as few as one or two master points to people with as many as 79,000 points. Winning one game is usually one master point.

“The hands are preset and at the end there will be a listing of every card that was in every hand,” Bartol said. “Everybody around the room plays the same hand. Here it’s not based on luck of the cards; it’s about how you are in relation to everyone else who played the identical cards. It takes a lot of the luck out of it. You’re scored by how you are in relation to the people who have the same cards you have.”

Last Tuesday was a charity night with about 40 people present. Players paid a bit more for the National Alzheimer’s Foundation as the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) has become one of its biggest partners.
