Giants wrap up wrestling season

Now that the 2012-13 wrestling season is complete, it’s the end of the chapter for Ben Davis coach Aaron Moss and his son Levi Moss.

Levi will leave Ben Davis as a four-time state qualifier and three-time state placer. He was a four-time Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference champion and the winningest wrestler in Ben Davis history. Getting to end at the highest competition of the high school level is fitting for father and son.

“It was very enjoyable watching my son compete in four state tournaments,” Aaron said. “With success, however, comes the pressure of doing better each year and as a parent, it’s hard. I watched my son carry that burden of competing at a high level. As a coach, it was awesome.”

Aaron said he was especially proud of how Levi fought through state this year with an ankle injury suffered at semistate.

“What made me most proud was what Levi learned from his circumstances,” Aaron said. “No doubt, healthy, he’s wrestling for a state title. However, he learned how tough he could be with a bad ankle. I told him that he would take that moment, that lesson, and use it elsewhere in life. It made him a better person and isn’t that what wrestling is all about?”

But the family was distraught over not getting to wrestle for the state championship.

“I felt real bad that he didn’t get to wrestle for a title,” Aaron said. “That night was really hard. I don’t think anyone in the house slept Saturday night after the finals.”

Sophomore Norman Oglesby also made it to state, but lost his opener after a troublesome week.

“Norman was sick all last weekend with a fever and came in Monday coughing up blood,” Aaron said to the Westside Flyer at state. “We took him to the doctor and he had pretty bad bronchitis. He didn’t practice all week and his match was the first time he stepped on the mat this week. It was the weirdest state week I’ve ever had.”
