Skillman appointed to Bowen Center board

The Bowen Center for Public Affairs at Ball State University is adding Indiana's 49th lieutenant governor, Becky Skillman, to its board of advisors. Skillman leaves her current post on Jan. 14.

As Indiana's lieutenant governor, Skillman spent the past eight years managing five state agencies including the Office of Community and Rural Affairs, Office of Energy Development, Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, Indiana State Department of Agriculture, and the Office of Tourism Development. Before serving as the first elected female lieutenant governor in Indiana, Skillman held elected offices in Lawrence County for 16 years and served as the president of the Association of Indiana Counties. She was elected to the Indiana Senate in 1992 and served in that role for 12 years.

"I worked diligently as lieutenant governor to enrich the lives of all Hoosiers and am honored to continue my service in a new role with the Bowen Center for Public Affairs," Skillman said in a press release. "Empowering those who want to lead and grow our communities is essential to Indiana's future."

The Bowen Center for Public Affairs' board of advisors is responsible for advising co-directors, Dr. Raymond Scheele and Dr. Sally Jo Vasicko, and providing counsel on the various programs and projects of the Bowen Center for Public Affairs.

In addition to her role at the Bowen Center for Public Affairs, Skillman will become the president and CEO of Radius Indiana, an eight-county economic development organization in South Central Indiana. She will also co-chair the Indiana Bicentennial Commission, which is planning the 200-year celebration of statehood in 2016.

The Bowen Center for Public Affairs advances the ideals of civic literacy, community involvement, and public service through focused training, networking, and research opportunities. Named for Dr. Otis R. Bowen, former governor of Indiana and U.S. secretary of health and human services, the center empowers people who want to participate in their communities, offering expert and practical viewpoints on the operation of local and state governments.
