In a recent article titled “Your Safer-Surgery Survival Guide,” Consumer Reports ranked hospitals nationwide using data from Medicare patients’ billing claims from 2009 to ‘11.
The study, covering 2,463 hospitals, looked at post-operative length of stay, which correlates to preventable complications. According to study data, Hendricks Regional Health outperformed other area hospitals in surgery safety.
One preventable complication following surgery is infections. For example, during the period that Consumer Reports pulled data on surgical complications, the national infection rate for a hernia repair surgery was 2.8 percent. At HRH, the infection rate on that surgery was 0.41 percent.
“The processes we have in place are working and allow us to deliver quality care,” HRH President and CEO Kevin Speer said in a press release.
“It’s nice to receive acknowledgment on a national scale that what we are doing at Hendricks Regional Health is helping achieve better outcomes for our patients,” Speed said.
