---- — The Indianapolis Museum of Art recently announced a $165,000 National Leadership Grant awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to create a rights and reproductions handbook for museum professionals.

Co-published by the IMA and The American Alliance of Museums, the digital publication will serve as the definitive resource for professionals charged with overseeing rights clearances, permissions, and intellectual property matters for cultural institutions. The IMA’s project is one of 16 chosen from a pool of 110 applicants to receive a National Leadership Grant.

The Rights and Reproductions Handbook for Museum Professionals will be produced utilizing the Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative (OSCI) Toolkit created by the IMA Lab, the media and technology arm of the IMA. With intellectual property laws and rights and reproductions methodologies ever-changing with the development of new technologies, the digital publication will be a living document that can be constantly updated to stay current with trends and best practices.

Anne Young, IMA manager of rights and reproductions, will serve as project director for the two-year IMLS grant. Featuring contributions from experts in the field, the publication will include 11 partners from museums, libraries, and universities such as The J. Paul Getty Museum, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Columbia University Libraries.

“The IMA is dedicated to continued service to the museum field,” said Charles L. Venable, Ph.D., The Melvin & Bren Simon director and CEO, “and this publication is an important step for all of us that deal with the complicated world of image rights on a daily basis.”

“Mastering the complexities of copyright in the digital age is an urgent task for museum professionals,” said Ford W. Bell, president of The American Alliance of Museums. “The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) is proud to partner with the Indianapolis Museum of Art —an outstanding, AAM-accredited museum — in co-publishing this authoritative new book about rights and reproductions in museums, libraries, archives, and other cultural institutions in the U.S. and around the world. This will be an important contribution to the knowledge and practice within the field.”

The IMA was last awarded an IMLS National Leadership Grant in 2011. That grant supported the development of tools and specifications for building, sharing, and preserving mobile content that all museums can use to create and deploy museum experiences on mobile devices.
