KNIGHTSTOWN — Friday night was a time warp for Ben Davis’ Joe Lentz and Amber Jones.
The Giants coach and 5-foot-11 senior participated in the Hoosiers’ Reunion All-Star Classic at Knightstown’s Historic Hoosier Gym, the movie home of the “Hoosiers” Hickory Huskers.
The Ben Davis pair were members of the red and yellow Hickory squad and, after leading most of the game, fell late 90-83 to the Terhune Tigers. But this night was not about who won or lost, it was about paying tribute to the movie that is synonymous with Indiana.
“This is neat, it’s a lot of fun,” Lentz said. “I had never been in this building before. I got in and all of the scenes from the movie came to mind. I went down in that locker room there where Coach Dale comes up. My wife said I was following the steps of Gene Hackman.”
Jones added, “It’s a historical landmark so it was good to be a part of something like this.”
Jones finished the Hoosier Reunion Classic with five points and four rebounds. She said she appreciated getting the opportunity to play in the game.
“It makes me realize what I did in high school paid off,” Jones said.
Lentz said he valued the opportunity to coach his Giants standout one more time.
“She did the things she always does,” he said. “She hustles, she plays defense, she played hard.
“It’s neat to coach her anytime. She’s a great kid and we’re going to miss her a lot. I always loved coaching her and she was one of the first kids I saw when I first came to Ben Davis.”
Jones said she was appreciative of her time with coach Lentz.
“We’ve build a bond, which is good, and he’s gotten me better,” Jones said.
With any all-star game, strategy and tactics are hard to implement with little practice time. Both squads only had an hour of practice time so Lentz tried different combinations of players.
“There’s not a lot of strategy, but I tried to apply some at the end,” Lentz said. “We were just rotating players. They’re all good players and you learn more and more about them when you play them.”
