TSA program aims to make travel easier on passengers

INDIANAPOLIS —

Officials with the Indianapolis International Airport (IND), along with the Transportation Security Administration, announced Wednesday the opening of the first application site for the TSA Pre-Check program.

David Kane, federal security director for TSA in Indiana, was on hand at the new application site to answer questions.

“We’re excited to partner with the Indianapolis Airport Authority to open TSA’s first enrollment center in the country here at Indianapolis International Airport,” Kane said. “TSA Pre-Check is a DHS (Department of Homeland Security) trusted traveler program.”

Kane said the program, which comes at a cost of $85 for five years, is a faster, more efficient process and is easier on passengers.

“It’s a voluntary program that allows passengers who are willing to share personal, biographical information with TSA to allow us to do a background check in advance of their travel,” he said. “What that does then, when they pass, it qualifies them as a TSA Pre-Check customer. TSA Pre-Check customers use separate lanes at our checkpoints around the country, they are permitted to leave on shoes, belts, light jackets, wallets, and coins in their pockets, 3-1-1 compliant liquids, and their computers can remain in their carry-on bag when they go through X-ray. The passengers themselves, rather than going through body images, go through a metal detector only.”

Kane said the first step for interested passengers is to do a pre-enrollment.

“They can do that by going onto our website at www.tsa.gov, complete the pre-enrollment form and set themselves an interview schedule at the enrollment center,” he said. “It’s important that a passenger looks at the website completely. There are a number of links within the TSA Pre-Check link that identifies required documentation and disqualifying events (such as certain crimes). The whole process that is needed in advance of the passenger arriving at the enrollment center is to reduce frustration of a passenger arriving and not having the required documentation. It’s important to take a look at those and make sure that they have everything required so it is truly a one stop shop.”

Kane said having the first application center at IND was an easy choice.

“Indianapolis International Airport is a new, modern security-centric facility — it was built with security in mind,” he said. “TSA has a great and longstanding working relationship with the Indianapolis Airport Authority. They are a very forward leaning, very innovative organization that has security and passenger comfort in mind. We just have a great working relationship, a great partnership, and things like this happen in those instances.”

Kane said the plan is to have more than 300 application centers over the next year around the country.
