Verizon offers tips to stop distracted driving

Hendricks County Flyer

---- — April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and Verizon Wireless suggests some simple tips for consumers to put into practice.

Nearly 57 percent of U.S. drivers admit to texting while driving. To help resist the temptation to text or talk on the phone while driving, Verizon suggests motorists adhere to the following:

• Use Bluetooth devices and set them for travel as you adjust everything else in your vehicle;

• Record an outgoing message on your phone that tells callers you’re driving and will get back to them when you’re off the road;

• Adjust controls and set your song playlist before you set out on the road;

• Get to know your wireless device and its features such as voice activation, hands-free options and speed dial; and

• Let the person you are speaking with know you are driving and suspend the call if you’re in heavy traffic or hazardous weather conditions.

Wireless carriers have been participating in nationwide education campaigns since 2000 to remind drivers —especially teens and inexperienced drivers — about the dangers of distracted driving.
