CLOVERDALE — Covenant advances with four-set win

Overcoming some uncomfortable moments, Covenant Christian reached the second round of its Class 2A volleyball sectional Tuesday night.

After winning the first set against host Cloverdale, Covenant dropped the second and got off to a bad start in the third. The Warriors rallied, and advanced with a 26-16, 17-25, 25-22, 25-10 victory.

Covenant struggled after libero Courtney King went down with an injury in the first set.

“It definitely impacted our players, but we overcame it, got through that game and were able to finish it off,” Covenant coach Rob Zajdel said.

Kills by Ashley Clevenger and Lauren Bloom, and aces by Morgan Pierce paced Covenant in the first set, in which the Warriors never trailed and won easily.

The second set was a different story, as Cloverdale jumped out to an 8-1 lead and led by as many as 11 points.

Hitting errors put Covenant in a 7-1 hole in the third set, but with King taped up and on the court, the Warriors came back to tie it at 11-11. The teams battled back and forth, but Bloom scored two of the final three points to push Covenant into the lead.

“We’ve had some trouble starting in some games, and I’m not sure why that is,” Zajdel said. “I’m still trying to figure that out.”

The Warriors’ momentum carried over to the final set, as Clevenger and Kennia Varela led the way in scoring.

Covenant will face Cascade at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Warriors dropped a two-set match to the Cadets on Aug. 24.

“We had them at our home tournament, and they walked out of the gym saying it was their best match of the season,” Zajdel said. “We didn’t play very well that day, so they have the edge, but we have the determination to go out there and beat them this time.”
