— Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to 6501 Nolte St. at about 4 p.m. Dec. 10 on a report of a person shot. The 911 caller, believed to be the victim’s mother, indicated that her grandson had shot her daughter.

When officers arrived at the residence, they found Paula Day, 54, of Indianapolis, unresponsive and suffering from several gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency crews.

Several members of the victim’s immediate family, including children, were inside the residence at the time of the shooting. No one else was reported to be injured.

Officers were told by several witnesses that the victim’s son, Eric Bowman, 36, of Indianapolis, is believed to have fired the shots and then fled the scene. Investigators were told that an argument over trash possibly prompted the shooting.

Several minutes later, dispatchers in Morgan County notified Indianapolis Public Safety Communications that a possible suspect had turned himself into the Brooklyn Police Department. They said the suspect was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The suspect was transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital in fair condition with what were reportedly non-life-threatening injuries.

Homicide investigators responded to Morgan County to interview and talk with witnesses in reference to the shooting in that county. In addition, several witnesses from the original scene were transported to police headquarters for further questioning.

Detectives have preliminarily charged Bowman with murder, but a final charging decision will be made by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office after a review of the case.

Bowman remains at Wishard Hospital detention recovering from his injuries.
