---- — Ben Davis’ wrestling team had a solid showing in Saturday’s Giant 16 wrestling tournament as the Giants capitalized on strong individual performances and won the tournament. It was first time in the tournament’s history Ben Davis had come up victorious.
Ben Davis (507) held off runner-up Greensburg (472.5) and Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference foe Terre Haute South (425).
The Giants had four champions on the day. James Pritchett (113), Jaylen Roth (132), Dylan Lydy (170) and Norman Oglesby (285) all won their weight classes. Ben Davis’ Paul McClelland (106) was the lone runner up at the 106-pound weight class.
“With some great competition from Greensburg, Terre Haute South and the other teams, our wrestlers performed exceptionally well Saturday,” Ben Davis coach Ted Bearman said. “We also had great results from other wrestlers that went 4-1.None of this would have been possible without the assistant coaches, parents and the fans that came out to support us.”
Ben Davis’ Nick Weddle (138), Gabriel Romero (145) and Kasha Wilder (220) all finished 4-1 and third in their respective weight classes. Austin Clevenger (120), Joe Domogalik (182) and Dalen Dotlich (195) all finished fifth.
Bearman pointed to the depth of the squad as one of the big reasons the Giants were able to come away with the victory as it was a total team effort.
As tournament hosts, Ben Davis protected its turf as each grappler did what was necessary for the Giants by elevating their individual performances.
“We asked them to go above and beyond expectations, finish the last round strong and help the team to score enough points to win the tournament,” Bearman said.”In that (last) round all but two of our wrestlers won, some earned bonus points and that helped our team win the championship for the first time since this tournament began.”
