---- — The weather didn’t stop Indianapolis Colts fans from coming out Saturday to donate to the Indiana Blood Center at the 14th annual Bleed Blue Blood Drive & Health Fair at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The blood drive and health fair offered a fun and informative family-friendly atmosphere for those willing to come out and give blood.

“We received 1,544 donations on Saturday,” Lucy Wehking, a media relations specialist for the IBC, said. “We were a little nervous at the beginning that the weather would keep people away, but by the end we had just what we needed.”

There were a few cancellations due to the weather so the blood center was able to accept some walk-ins.

Each donor received a Pat McAfee football, adorned with his photo and a copy of his autograph.

Donors also had access to the field, PLAY 60 Zone, and the health fair. Colts cheerleaders and players also stopped by to offer autographs. The Colts Super Bowl Trophy was available for viewing and Blue, the Colts’ mascot, made an appearance as well.

“One thing we do for the donor is a mini physical,” Wehking said. “The donors come in and fill out a donor registration form. They give a health history and some demographic information. We just want to make sure everyone donating blood is feeling healthy.”

A medical technician gives the mini physical and checks the donor’s iron level, temperature, and pulse. The event accepted platelet donations, double red cell donations, and the most popular whole blood donations.

“This was a very successful Bleed Blue Blood Drive,” Wehking said. “We are so appreciative of all the people who came out to donate. We still had people travel from Fort Wayne and Terre Haute to participate — even in the bad weather.”

The Bleed Blue Blood Drive continues with Donor Center Days. Donors are encouraged to make appointments on specific days so they too can receive the limited-edition Pat McAfee football. The Donor Center Days will be Dec. 23 for Greenwood and Terre Haute, Dec. 26 for Fishers and Lafayette, Dec. 27 for Muncie and Columbus, Dec. 28 for Carmel and Avon (Hendricks Regional Health YMCA), and Dec. 30 for downtown Indianapolis.
