---- — A sweep of the middle weight classes from 132 to 182 pounds provided all of the needed points to separate Ben Davis’ wrestling team from Decatur Central for a 52-18 victory in dual meet action at Decatur Central last week.
The team score was satisfying for first-year coach Ted Bearman as the Giants continue to ready themselves for the Marion County wrestling tournament at Franklin Central on Dec. 21.
“We’re wrestling really tough right now and are looking to keep on improving,” Bearman said. “Decatur Central is starting to rebuild their program, but this did help build some confidence for our guys.”
The match started at 160 pounds and Ben Davis got a tight 10-7 decision from Sean Jones over the Hawks’ Brayton Fox. Junior Dylan Lydy and senior Joseph Domogalik followed with pins at 170 and 182 pounds as the Giants surged to a 15-0 advantage.
The Hawks took four of the next five contested matches on the card to get as close as 21-15, as Norman Oglesby earned the only Giant win with a first period pin against Austin Osborn.
However, no other Hawk gained a win after Dylan Dearing scored a pair of escapes in the last two periods and held off Ben Davis’ Jacob Wynkoop for a 4-2 decision at 126, the tightest match of the night.
“We saw that (Decatur Central) did not have a 113 pounder, and we bumped some guys up to get (Jacob) the match,” Bearman said. “Wynkoop wrestled heavier than he usually does, but he needs to learn to wrestle those guys and get the win. He can compete, but he needs to step it up and get that win.”
After Wynkoop’s defeat, the Giants swept the final four bouts, featuring Brady Johnson scoring a pin and Colin Brumett claiming the fastest win of the night with a pin in 48 seconds.
In between pins, Gabriel Romero (138) and Nick Weddle (145) both won decisions.
“One of our strong points has been right through the middle,” Bearman said. “It was nice starting with a good win for Jones. Dylan was exceptional doing everything to a tee like he should. And, Domogalik came through and got us a good win. Wrapping things up, Weddle has really come along and been a force for us.”
Completing the Ben Davis team score were forfeits claimed by Paul McClelland and James Pritchett.
