Lizton artisian to showcase work

INDIANAPOLIS — The staff at Eagle Creek Park will once again host the Woodcarver Woodturner & Woodburner Exhibition and Sale Feb. 22 and 23.

The event, in its 22nd year, runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day in the Earth Discovery Center. It will include hand-crafted items that will be on display and for sale. Master woodworkers will also be demonstrating their skills and craftsmanship.

Allen Berg of Lizton is one of the woodworkers who will be participating in this year’s event.

“I’ve been going to the show for at least 10 years,” Berg said. “It’s a nice show.”

The event gives woodcarvers an opportunity to showcase their talents.

“It is a wildlife exhibit,” Berg said. “There are also a lot of American Indian items. And everything is for sale.”

Several artists, including Berg, will be demonstrating their craft.

“I’ll be working on a life-sized eagle,” he said. “I’ll be demonstrating the chisel and some gouges. There are other interesting things people will be doing there.”

In the past, he said, artists have been turning bowls and demonstrating wood burning techniques and he expects that to be a part of this show as well.

Berg said woodcarving is his winter hobby. He’s been creating items from wood for more than 35 years. He does a lot of Santa figurines for the holiday season but also enjoys doing wildlife projects.

Berg said it’ll be nice to just get out and see other people after the harsh winter Indiana has had this season.

“We need something to do in February,” he said. “It’ll be nice to be out.”

Eagle Creek naturalist Leah Frenzel took over the organization of the show this year. She said she’s attended in the past and is excited to see how her first show goes.
