Westside Retirement Village undergoing major renovation

INDIANAPOLIS — Westside Retirement Village here is undergoing a $30 million remodeling project to help better serve its present and future residents.

Community Outreach Coordinator Cindi Daniel said Westside Retirement originally started about 25 years ago as a venture by Westside Nazarene Church. The church came up with the idea, built the facility, and ran it until Life Care Centers of America bought it 19 years ago.

“The nice thing about Westside Retirement is that we have had a very positive reputation with the community for 25 years,” she said.

The renovation began two years ago and the assisted living portion is expected to be completed by the end of this year, while the healthcare side’s targeted completion date is next September.

Daniel said the project will add 100 assisted living apartments with porches, sunrooms, and French doors. Seventy-three beds and a memory unit will be added to the healthcare side. Other additions will include a new front entrance, a walking path around the facility, a putting green, an indoor swimming pool, and various courtyards.

Other additions will include new dining rooms, game rooms, a beauty shop, and a stage for entertainment.

“This is actually attractive to the adults that are looking for somewhere to place their parents,” Daniel said. “When everything is done, we’ll have 100 assisted living apartments and 132 healthcare beds.”

When the remodeling began, residents had to move out of their apartments for a period of time. Daniel said they have been pleased with the changes and have been very understanding throughout the chaos.

Resident Wilma Sullivan said she moved into Westside Retirement Village the first week it opened, even though her family didn’t want her to.

“This change has been hard on everyone, but it’s all going to be worth it,” she said.

Westside Retirement Village is Indianapolis’ only westside continuing care community that provides independent living, licensed assisted living apartments, a healthcare center, in and outpatient therapies, and lifestyle exercise appointments.
