Coatesville youth league to host hog roast
by Kevin Leibrock
Softball fans seeking a small-town carnival experience need look no further than the Coatesville Youth League Hog Roast. The two-day event kicks off from 5-9 p.m. May 30 before running from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. May 31.
The two Coatesville youth diamonds will see heavy use as 33 softball tournament games are scheduled for the event. Rain or shine, festivities will include carnival rides, live bands, face painting, free bingo, hot meals, and a cornhole tournament. KD Stables, a local entertainment company based in Jamestown, will provide the carnival rides and split its profits with the CYL.
Despite the multitude of entertainment options, CYL T-ball coach Misty Webb said the organization has had difficulty acquiring sponsorships and attracting attendees.
“A lot of people that I’ve talked to said it’s mostly because of the economy,” she said. “It’s mainly because of gas prices, grocery prices, and just how tight money is these days. We’re trying to get the word out and we’re also trying to get WZPL’s morning DJ Smiley to come out to the event.”
Attendees can donate raffle items, but sponsors are needed to help with the cost.
“We need sponsors in general to help out with donating,” Webb said. “We’re looking for a big prize to raffle off — last year we had a Nintendo Wii. I know times are hard, but we’re looking for any kind of sponsor for this event.”
Organizations that choose to sponsor the event are presented with several advertising options. For $25, sponsors can advertise on the CYL’s team poster, which will be distributed throughout local towns such as Plainfield, Danville, Coatesville, and Amo.
Advertising space is also available on the CYL’s “Big Fence.” For $100 a year, sponsors can affix signage to the large fence at the Coatesville youth diamonds.
The CYL plans to use funds generated from the hog roast to maintain its diamonds and assist children who are unable to afford league sign-up costs.
