BROWNSBURG — Winning over your conference rival always feels good. Winning over your county rival feels even better.
The Avon wrestling team accomplished both of those objectives last night with its 47-22 victory over Brownsburg.
“The kids wrestled well and we are getting better every week,” Avon coach Israel Blevins said. “Tonight we did some good things, really, a lot of good things that we can keep building on. There are a few things we need to fix, but we are a very young team.”
Exciting action in the first six matches all resulted in pins. Avon jumped out to a 12-0 lead as Brendon Helm (160) and Evan Elmore (170) each won by fall in the second period.
Brownsburg responded as Conner Ludwig (182) pinned Tanner Brandt at :37 in the second.
Avon again went on a two-match tear. This time Shane Burgoon (195) and Dylan Jones (220) each won by fall. Jones pinned Tyler Harlan with just five seconds remaining in the match.
“Some of my upper weight guys needed to man up a little and we’ll work on that,” Brownsburg coach Jason Catellier said.
At 285, Brownsburg’s Brandon Webber pinned Avon’s John Boffo. With six matches in the book, Avon held a 24-12 advantage over the Bulldogs.
The Orioles won three straight as Bailey Chatterton (103) and Brian Rassbach (113) each won by decision and Caleb Loman (120) took a major decision over Brownsburg’s Conner Allen.
In what turned out to be a high scoring affair at126, Brownsburg’s Austen Arnold won by a 20-6 major decision over Quinton Harris.
Avon again went on a three-match run as Matt Svorinic (132) won by decision, Marcus Miranda (138) pinned Brownsburg’s Saevon Canto, and Gabe Dunham (145) took a major decision.
In the final match of the night, Brownsburg’s CJ Damler (152) pinned Avon’s Bret Hasse.
Brownsburg has fought the injury bug in its lineup recently and had several inexperienced wrestlers on the mat against the Orioles, but Catellier said he was encouraged by their performances.
