Millers tackle Quakers

PLAINFIELD — The Plainfield wrestling team ran into a buzzsaw Thursday night, unfortunately they weren’t sharp enough to keep up.

Noblesville, from the strong Hoosier Crossroads Conference, dropped the Quakers 59-15.

It was the first year that the two teams had met and Plainfield coach Paul Nicodemus knew they would be tough competition. The Millers were coming off a sectional championship and were returning most of its team.

“I wanted some good competition,” Nicodemus said. “I wanted our guys to have a tough test early in the season and that’s what we got. I felt like still, even though we only won a few matches we did some good things in some of the other matches.”

Freshman Isaac Gomez provided the first points of the evening for the Quakers when he pinned Noblesville’s Jack Wishart in the second period.

“Isaac is really, really tough,” Nicodemus said. “He wrestles with a lot of savvy for a freshman and he just has everything you want. He has good leverage, he has good quickness and so we are really happy with his progress so far.”

Senior Ben Macri continued his strong season with a second period pin of the Millers’ Stephen Storey. Macri’s only loss of the season came against Fishers when he fell 3-2 to a wrestler who advanced to state last year.

“Ben expects to win every time he steps up to the mat and that’s good for the other kids to see,” Nicodemus said. “When Ben wrestles with that confidence it gives the entire team that confidence. Sky is the limit for Ben this year. He’s looked really tough this season and he showed tonight why he’s a force on the mat.”

Sophomore Dayton Clements provided a nail-biting victory over Mitch McVey 10-8. Clements led 2-0 after the first, 6-2 after the second and had to fight off a rally from McVey to take home the victory.

Avon’s Patrick Rodgers made the cut at last week’s RBC Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club, and was a solid 4-under par on holes 1-11 over the weekend. It was the remaining holes that were the problem, as he went 7-over on those to finish at even-par and tied for 62nd place.
