Plainfield, Cascade place second at conference meets

Both the Cascade and Plainfield girls’ golf teams participated in conference tournaments over the weekend and had strikingly similar outcomes.

Cascade wound up second, 11 strokes behind winner Greencastle, in the West Central Conference.

Plainfield was the runner-up in the Mid-State Conference, 11 strokes behind Martinsville.

Each team also finished with two all-conference players.

Senior Mary Tomblin (97) and sophomore Maureen Flannigan (102) each placed in the WCC’s top 10.

“Mary has worked hard for four years and it was a better score for her this year,” Cascade coach David Smyth said. “Maureen shot a career best and had a really good day. I’m proud of both of those girls.”

Plainfield’s Liz Cozart (84) and Tori Treash (87) both made the all-conference cut in the Mid-State.

“It was nice to see Liz putting it together and get that honor,” Plainfield coach Jon Utterback said. “Tori’s just a freshman and it was great to see her put up a solid number. She’s got a great upside.”

Plainfield’s squad of Cozart, Treash, Nicki Gilbert (94), Paige Miller (89) and Hailey Kuntz (101) combined for the Quakers’ 354.

“Martinsville was the favorite and we wanted to play as well as we could and see what happened,” Utterback said. “We did pretty good.”

Cascade’s squad of Tomblin, Flannigan, Sage Archer (105), Shelby Baldwin (106) and Alyssa Gowan (116) carded a 410.

“I told everybody if we shot a 410 we would walk away with the championship,” Smyth said. “I wasn’t sure if we could shoot 410, but I thought that would win. Every one of our girls shot better than they average. I like seeing them stepping up on a big day.”

Each coach hopes their teams use these performances as a springboard for success as each approaches sectional play at West Chase Golf Course this Saturday.

“This gives our girls a real healthy competitive environment and focus point heading into sectionals,” Utterback said. “I think they are a little more hungry and a bit more confident than last week. West Chase has always been a tough course for us, especially the back nine. We got out last year and can do it again this year.”

Smyth added, “ I hope we use our conference performance as a confidence boost. We want to use this and take our match against Monrovia this week and use it as we head to sectionals this weekend.”

Avon’s Patrick Rodgers made the cut at last week’s RBC Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club, and was a solid 4-under par on holes 1-11 over the weekend. It was the remaining holes that were the problem, as he went 7-over on those to finish at even-par and tied for 62nd place.
