Quakers stay unbeaten with road win

PLAINFIELD — MOORESVILLE – On the field following last week’s win over Danville, Plainfield football coach Brian Woodard told his team just how much he wanted a road victory over Mooresville, something that had eluded him since he took over the program in 2006.

Jacob Maple had 192 rushing yards, Brady Nichols threw for 161 and Plainfield’s starting defense yielded no points, as Woodard got his wish Friday night with a 42-14 triumph.

“I really thought we finished well,” Woodard said. “We took control, our quarterback did some nice things and our running backs finished runs and did a nice job.”

Plainfield (3-0 overall, 1-0 in Mid-State Conference) came out determined to put points on the board right away. Two plays after Josh Miller converted on fourth down at midfield on the first possession, Maple took a direct snap for a 42-yard touchdown.

On the Quakers’ next drive, on fourth-and-15, Nichols hit Ricardo Dubecky on a short dump pass, and Dubecky went the distance for a 40-yard score.

“It was important for us to start well, just like the Danville game,” Woodard said. “You don’t want to dig yourself out of a hole on the road, especially in-conference.”

After Nichols connected with Garrett Patton for a TD to make it 21-0, Plainfield’s defense bent but didn’t break on the ensuing possession. On the 15th play of a five-minute drive, the Quakers forced and recovered a fumble at their 2-yard line. They also held on a fourth and-10 two series later to preserve a three-touchdown lead at the half.

“That was huge,” Woodard said. “Our entire defensive staff does a great job, and we’ve got kids that run well and kids that are physical inside. They really rallied to the ball.”

Plainfield had a special teams snafu to start the second half when a mishandled punt snap ended up in the end zone for a Mooresville touchdown.

That momentum didn’t last long, as Miller, Tristan Southwood and Drew Thomas followed with TD runs for a 42-6 Plainfield lead.

Braxton Hass had a 2-yard scoring run for Mooresville (0-3, 0-1) against Plainfield’s reserves with just over a minute remaining, for its first offensive points of the year.

Plainfield will now gear up for a road showdown with longtime nemesis Roncalli, which dropped to 1-2 with a 35-20 loss to Chatard. The Quakers are 4-8 against the Rebels since 2005, including two season-ending losses the past two years.

“When you go over there, you find out how tough you are mentally and physically,” Woodard said. “It’s a big challenge, and hopefully we’ll be ready for it.”

Maple said the Quakers would be ready.

“I haven’t played against them yet, but I’ve come to all the games,” he said. “We respect them highly. I’m just looking forward to playing them.”
