Orioles win shortened N.C. Invite

INDIANAPOLIS — The third-ranked Avon girls’ soccer team battled the heat and quality foes Saturday at North Central High School, and came out with a win over the hosts and downed No. 14 Center Grove 1-0 in a game called because of the weather.

Avon controlled the action against North Central, especially in the second half, in a 4-1 victory.

“The first half was really back-and-forth,” Avon coach Eric Nance said. “They’re very physical and have some quick players up top, and they kind of stretched us out and had some good chances on us. In the second half, we cleaned things up and got our offense going.”

Avon took a 1-0 lead to halftime after Madison Knock scored off an assist from Cassidy Blacha.

In the second half, Blacha had two goals, one on a feed from Bailee Storms and another from Aspen Weyenberg. Blacha had an assist of her own on a goal by Sierra Weyenberg as the Orioles pulled away.

After playing the first game in the heat, the Orioles took a break at a make-shift camp they set up under and around a tree.

“That weather was so hard for the girls and all four teams were in the same situation,” Nance said. “We had the players, fans and supporters there with us to relax and get some shade between games.”

Against Center Grove, S. Weyenberg scored off an unusual type of assist, putting Avon up 1-0 late in the first half. Avon goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey had a long clearance over the defenders’ heads. The Orioles played it back to Dossey and she did the rest.

“It’s not often that happens,” Nance said. “We’re very happy to have Kelsey and she’s been doing a great job for us. She got the shutout as well.”
