Brownsburg takes sectional crown

AVON — For the first time since its magical state title run of 2007-08, the Brownsburg boys’ basketball team brought home a sectional title.

With a 58-47 win over Martinsville Saturday night, the Bulldogs accomplished what no other Brownsburg squad had done in five seasons.

“We talked about both teams were wanting the same thing but only one team could have it,” said first-year Brownsburg coach Steve Lynch. “We had our ups and downs, but we were right there and down the stretch, we played very well.”

Three Brownsburg players — K.J. Walton (19), Trevor Lucas (18), and Darrian Ringo (13) — finished in double figures and led the squad to victory. The trio connected on 16 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

“The win means everything… everybody has been waiting for us to do something big and I’m just happy, excited,” Walton said. “If somebody is having a bad shooting night another can step up and I’m just grateful to have three guys that are this good.”

Both teams came out aggressively in the opening quarter with three lead changes as the teams traded baskets, but Brownsburg seized control. Bulldogs senior Kyle Thompson got things going in the paint with a nice up-and-under and then duplicated the same move, completing an and-one in the process for a five-point swing.

“In my mind I thought we needed to come out and have a quick start and one of my major goals is to bring energy to the team,” Thompson said. “I was emotional and excited. I’m not ready for this to be over and am looking forward to the regional.”

Brownsburg knew it had to limit Martinsville’s Troy Spears’ shooting and both Lucas and Walton said part of the game plan was to make Spears put the ball on the floor rather than giving him catch-and-shoot opportunities.
