Bruins dominate in home victory

LIZTON — Behind strong pitching and loads of scoring, the Tri-West baseball team won 21-1 over visiting Bethesda Christian on Saturday.

“I was really pleased with the effort,” Tri-West coach Ryan Oppy said. “They came out here focused, regardless of the opponent. They worked hard prior to the game and that’s what I want to see.”

The Bruins scored nine in the first inning to get off to a great start. Though they were able to get three hits in the frame, the Patriots didn’t help themselves with four errors.

However, the five runs in the second were more due to the Tri-West offense than Bethesda’s defense. Aaron Sorgius and Nick Rabe each added two-run singles. Austin Lynn also recorded an RBI single in the frame.

Bethesda Christian got on the board in the top of the third on an RBI single by John Mlagan.

“We never put our heads down and kept trying, no matter what the score was,” Bethesda Christian coach David Stafford said. “We had a couple errors out there, but overall I’m really proud of them because they’re walking out of here the same way that they walked in — with their heads held high.”

In the bottom of the third, Jake Ellingwood, Drake Stahl, and Blaine Cora each got an RBI for the Bruins.

Tri-West added four more runs in the fourth to achieve the final outcome.

Oppy was pleased with the offensive effort from his squad.

“We were on base a lot today and we actually started hitting the ball a little bit better,” he said. “We got them in and didn’t leave them stranded on the bases. That’s something that we’ve been working on, getting them over and getting them in. I’m pleased that they did that well today.”

Rick Perry tossed three innings for the win. Perry allowed just one run on three hits, while striking out seven. Cora threw two shutout innings to close the game.

“Rick and Blaine both threw really well,” Oppy said. “We were trying to get them some work today and all we can ask is for them to throw strikes and let the defenders play their positions. I was really happy with how they performed.”
