Orioles win back-to-back titles

Avon's Thompson individual medalist

BROWNSBURG — For the second consecutive season under coach Amy Nickol, the Avon Orioles girls’ golf team hoisted the Hendricks County Championship trophy.

Last season, the Orioles bested Brownsburg by nine strokes. This year, Avon ran away from the field, winning by 30 strokes over second place Plainfield Saturday at West Chase Golf Club.

“This shows the team that they are progressing and gives them confidence as we continue on through this season,” Nickol said. “They’re ultimate goal is the state tournament and this is just one of the stepping stones to get there and they proved to themselves they could do it.”

Of the 10 all-county spots, Avon claimed five of them, including Rachel Thompson taking home individual medalist honors. Thompson shot two-over on the front and four-over on the back for a 78 and was the only golfer to break into the 70s.

“I was lucky to pull out and shoot a good score,” Thompson said. “I putted very well and that saved me a lot of strokes. This has always been a goal for me to be the medalist my senior year and I’m humbled to be able to accomplish this.”

Thompson’s sister, sophomore Leah Thompson, finished second by carding an 84. The pair has been playing golf since the latter part of grade school and the competition has been stiff, but the elder Thompson was very proud of her sister’s accomplishment.

“We’re very competitive,” Rachel said with a laugh. “I’m really glad our team won, but I’m also glad my sister came in second after me.”

R. Thompson (78), L. Thompson (84), Alex Price (93), Danielle Prechtel (94), and Ashley Pawlowski (86) each were named to the all-county squad.

Even more impressive in Nickol’s eyes was the fact that none of the girls shot over 100, something someone from the Orioles did each match last season.

Avon’s Patrick Rodgers made the cut at last week’s RBC Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club, and was a solid 4-under par on holes 1-11 over the weekend. It was the remaining holes that were the problem, as he went 7-over on those to finish at even-par and tied for 62nd place.
