Local youth excels at karate

BROWNSBURG — For Plainfield’s Logan Marie Eddington, quick accomplishments are nothing.

Logan has achieved a first-degree blackbelt, helped instruct karate, and earned the S.W.A.T. leadership team membership — all in the first decade of her life.

The most recent of these accomplishments is earning her blackbelt March 16, as a 9-year-old.

“It was a really nice accomplishment,” Logan said.

Now 10, she achieved her blackbelt in about two and a half years.

“I am extremely proud,” her mother, LeAnne Eddington, said. “I was an athlete myself growing up and I achieved a lot, but she’s far exceed that already at the age of 10. It’s really exciting to watch her. She’s so humble, sweet, and kind. It makes me proud that she’s my daughter.”

Logan is also training on six weapons. Though she is not quite certified in them, her mother said she’s “definitely ready for that.”

In addition, Logan is a scholar student at Van Buren Elementary School and is also involved in dance.

Eddington said she thinks her daughter is a nice role model for the younger participants in karate at Phil Morgan Karate USA, where she trains.

“She actually takes a leadership role in karate and dance,” Eddington said. “She works with the younger ones and it’s nice to have someone like her to look up to.”

With all of the achievements, Logan listed leadership and teaching the younger children as her favorite aspects.

“(The leadership part) is actually really fun,” she said. “It helps me with my confidence.”

That confidence was a huge goal for Eddington as Logan began karate.

“At first, I thought that maybe (karate) would help her come out of her shell a little bit,” Eddington said. “She was a little shy. I thought that maybe karate would help with self defense and her being more assertive. She just fell in love with it and stuck with it.”

As for the future, Logan hopes to continue her karate accolades.

“Eventually, I want to get my Master’s belt,” she said. “I also want to get my weapons.”

Logan explained that there are 10 degrees of blackbelts and on the eighth, you can earn the Master’s belt. She said it takes a year or two to go between each degree.
