Quakers win thriller

INDIANAPOLIS —  Riding a three-set action-packed victory, the Plainfield girls’ tennis team defeated host Ben Davis 3-2 Thursday night and did so without the usual order of players.

“The efforts were great,” Plainfield coach Keith Bradley said. “We’ve played with the lineup a little bit.”

Plainfield’s Jessie Rigdon downed Ben Davis’ Savannah Willis in an exciting, three-set match between the two team’s No. 3 singles players. Rigdon came back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-4 and 6-4.

For Rigdon, the spotlight was not new, but the type of stage was.

“Jessie has played great this year,” Bradley said. “She was 7-1 in doubles and we decided to give her an opportunity to play a singles match tonight. She just lays it out there. It was nice to see her step up and close out the match.”

For Willis, the long match was nothing new.

“Savannah played four and a half hours last night,” Ben Davis coach Kevin Vanderbush said. “They only finished two sets and we have to go back and finish the third. I think she ran out of gas. She was right in there and very easily could have won this. It came down to a point that went either way that determined the match.”

In No. 1 singles action, Ben Davis’ Natalie Drummond defeated Carrie Copeland 6-2, 6-2.

In No. 2 singles, Plainfield’s Audrey Koeberlein defeated Julia Calhoun 6-3, 6-1.

“Audrey has been steady,” Bradley said. “She’s 6-2 on the season now and has played really good tennis. We’ve asked her to play doubles and singles and she’s doing a great job for us.”

In No. 1 doubles, Ben Davis’ Alyssa Montgomery and Haley Runyon defeated Plainfield’s Kristen Lees and Natalie Naaman, 6-2, 6-3.

The Quakers’ Bailey Jackman and Betsy Gillenwater downed Jayashree Brown-Riddles and Emma Drummond 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles.

“Two of our seniors stepped up for the doubles win,” Bradley said. “That was the second time that they had played a match together this season and did a great job.”

Vanderbush was pleased with the parity and the aggressive nature of each squad.

“I like the way that my girls compete,” he said. “I think on any given day, if we played them a number of times, I think we would just keep going back and forth.”
