Avon dismantles Ben Davis

INDIANAPOLIS — Through the first five wrestling matches Tuesday night, Ben Davis led Avon, 12-10. However, Avon tore through the rest of the Giants’ lineup, winning the next nine matches for a 51-12 victory.

“The kids took care of business and continue to wrestle well,” Avon coach Israel Blevins said. “I was a little nervous coming into this as I hadn’t seen Ben Davis wrestle anywhere. I saw some results that made me nervous.”

Ben Davis’ Dylan Lydy (170 pounds) put the Giants up 6-0 to begin the match with a pin over Avon’s Lance Meyer.

“Dylan gets after it and is the kind of wrestler you just love to watch,” Ben Davis coach Ted Bearman said. “I enjoy seeing his matches because he just does not stop.”

Avon’s Evan Elmore (182) evened the match with a first period pin of Ben Davis’ Kevin Lorez, and Oriole Shane Dillehay (195) notched a 17-5 major decision over Dalen Dotlich for a 10-6 lead.

Ben Davis’ Kasha’ Wilder (220) took a 3-1 decision from Gunnar Larson, setting up a good matchup at 285.

No. 14 Guy Henson of Avon took on No. 4-ranked Norman Oglesby at 285-pounds, and while it was a match between two of the state’s top heavyweights, more was at stake. Henson transferred from Ben Davis last spring and the pair were practice partners.

“We said last year that we had two of the better heavyweights in the state at the same school, unfortunately,” Bearman said. “When Guy made the move, we knew this would be one we looked forward to and it proved to be true, they’re both good wrestlers with different styles.”

Oglesby scored a takedown in the first, but Henson answered with an escape with only 2.1 seconds left in the period. Henson tied it at 2-2 in the second with another escape. Oglesby pulled out the 3-2 decision with an escape in the third, giving Ben Davis its last lead of the night at 12-10.
