Bruins cruise to victory

TRAFALGAR — The Tri-West Bruins and Danville Warriors softball teams met yet again Monday night at Indian Creek High School for the first round of Sectional 27 in the IHSAA 3A softball tournament.

The Bruins won the game 15-0 in five innings. Tri-West opened with six runs in the top of the first inning and followed it with another six runs in the top of the second.

“We definitely could not have come out any stronger than we did in this game,” Tri-West coach Stacey Rogers said. “I am excited to see that we’ve peaked at the right time of the season.”

Through five innings, the Bruins tallied 15 hits while holding the Warriors to just five. Tri-West sophomore pitcher Lacey Meyer, threw a complete game and finished with three strikeouts.

Bruins sophomore third baseman Claire Johnson led the offense with two homeruns and seven RBI. Johnson had an additional hit which bounced off of the centerfield fence.

Johnson remained humble following the game.

“It was a team effort,” she said. “I just do my best to go out help the team out.”

Rogers was pleased with Johnson’s effort.

“Claire is an outstanding hitter and it’s something we’ve come to expect from her this season,” Rogers said. “Two homeruns is a little bit of a surprise but hopefully she can continue that the next couple of weeks.”

With the explosive offensive output from the Bruins, the Warriors were forced to find runs early.

Danville was able to get two consecutive hits from junior Hannah Kelly and senior Katie Rigdon in the bottom of the second inning. But all momentum ended on the following hitter after the ball came off the bat and hit a base runner in the leg. By rule that becomes an out and seemingly ended all momentum the Warriors were beginning to build.

“We just didn’t come to play tonight,” Danville coach Jennifer Chasteen said. “I don’t think we got off the bus.”

The Bruins had eight stolen bases on the night to boost their already smooth-running offense.

Joining  Johnson with three hits for the Bruins were senior Kaitlyn Settlemoir, senior Taylor Baggett and sophomore Marita Van Dyke. Van Dyke also added 3 RBI to her stats.

Avon’s Patrick Rodgers made the cut at last week’s RBC Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club, and was a solid 4-under par on holes 1-11 over the weekend. It was the remaining holes that were the problem, as he went 7-over on those to finish at even-par and tied for 62nd place.
