Quakers stifle Giants

PLAINFIELD — In a marathon of a game that went over two and half hours, the Plainfield Quakers outlasted the Ben Davis Giants.

The Quakers won 6-1 against the Giants to improve to 11-8 on the season.

“It’s always good to get a win and the kids keep battling, battling and battling,” Plainfield coach Jeff McKeon said.

Ben Davis fell to 6-10 with the loss and the coaching staff was not happy with its team’s performance.

“We didn’t show up, end of story,” Ben Davis coach Aaron Kroll said.

Kroll said he didn’t know the reason for the letdown after a solid weekend of baseball.

“We didn’t pitch, we didn’t hit, we fielded it OK but we didn’t show,” he said. “We played our best game of the year Saturday. We’ve been playing really well actually, we just didn’t show up.”

Junior Andrew Sparks got the win for the Quakers after a solid five innings of pitching. Sparks gave up only three hits to limit the Giants.

“Andrew Sparks did a great job tonight,” McKeon said. “The credit of the game goes to Andrew. Our pitching staff has been depleted. We’re basically just putting a band-aid on it and Andrew came up big going almost six innings for us.”

Plainfield scored six runs on only four hits as they were able to take advantage of the Giants’ mistakes.

“The hitters took good approaches at the plate,” McKeon said. “Our pitching staff, give a lot of credit to Andrew Sparks, for allowing our hitters to attack on those pitches.”

Ben Davis got up 1-0 in the first inning as Sean Boswell stole second and third before an overthrow to home brought the junior in to score.

Plainfield tied the score at 1-1 as Justin Martin scored off a wild pitch. The Quakers then added three runs in the third inning as Alec Caprarella, Matt Spaulding and Gabe Burkhardt all scored.
