Danville downs Rockville

DANVILLE — The Danville girls’ tennis team made quick work of the visiting Rockville Rox Monday night.

The Warriors took the No.1 and No. 2 doubles matches within an hour and the No. 1 singles match solidified the 4-1 victory just after that.

“Getting up in all the matches was good,” Danville coach Mike Burdsall said. “When the number two’s came off I was caught a bit off guard. Having them walk off and seeing that helped our one and two singles players because they do look at what’s going on down the court.”

Under a varying 10 to 15 mph wind, the teams were forced to play under some tough conditions when the gusts came up.

Danville’s Anna Eschbach thought the wind helped her at the No. 1 singles spot. The junior dropped only three games en route to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rockville senior Brooke Tiley.

“I feel like the winds worked with me as I was able to hit it right to the baseline and she wasn’t able to get to it in time, it was too hard,” Eschbach said. “I felt like I served really well today. They hit the corners and spun to the side and went out. She had a hard time receiving them. ”

The Warriors’ No. 2 doubles squad of Molly Dwyer and Marie Summers mirrored Eschbach’s performance, only losing three games — all in the first set — along the way to a 6-3, 6-0 win. The pair, who Burdsall has dubbed M and M, played solid tennis the entire afternoon.

“They’re only sophomores and have the size,” Burdsall said. “When they are playing well at the net, they’re intimidating.”

Danville’s No. 1 doubles team of Megan Hamilton and Madeline Motes had a bit tougher time in their match with Rockville’s Kay Kiger and Megan Baxter. Though the pair never trailed, they won 6-4, 6-3.
