County teams successful at conference meets

Several local schools participated in their respective conference swimming and diving championships last weekend.

Hoosier Crossroads Conference

The Avon and Brownsburg boys’ and girls’ swim teams traveled to Purdue University this past weekend, adding some pretty good team performances and great individual successes along the way.

The Avon boys’ team finished second, trailing Hamilton Southeastern by only six points, 403-397. The Orioles had four event winners on the day.

Individual winners for the Orioles included Matt Stowe, Christian Lorenz, Grant Lewis, and Greg Sprout in the 200 medley relay, Parks in the 200 free, Lorenz in the 100 breaststroke, and Lewis, Sprout, Jones, and Zack Czerwonky in the 400 free relay.

Brownsburg finished fifth out of the 10 HCC teams with no individual champions.

On the girls’ side of things, Avon finished fourth and Brownsburg took seventh. Hamilton Southeastern’s girls completed the sweep for the Royals, edging Zionsville by two points.

The Orioles’ Liz Wishart was the only individual winner from both schools, taking first in the 100 breast.

West Central Conference

The Cascade Cadets girls’ and boys’ swim teams traveled to DePauw University over the weekend. The girls’ team narrowly missed a first-place finish, despite winning eight events.

Individual winners for the girls included Alexis Brown (200 free), Hayley Rosales (200 IM and 100 fly), Tori Breeding (100 and 500 free), and Regina Solik (50 free and 100 breast). The girls also broke three school records on the day as Solik set the 100 breast (1:13.53) and the 200 medley relay team of Brown, Solik, Kristi DeWeese, and Rosales broke the school record in a time of 2:02.20 while the 200 free relay team of Breeding, Rosales, Solik, and Chasity Keegan came in at a time of 1:48.58.

On the boys’ side, Cascade took fourth and recorded only one win as diver Kyle Trent took first. Senior Jessie Gilmore set a new school record in the 200 free, besting a 6-year-old mark.

Avon’s Patrick Rodgers made the cut at last week’s RBC Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club, and was a solid 4-under par on holes 1-11 over the weekend. It was the remaining holes that were the problem, as he went 7-over on those to finish at even-par and tied for 62nd place.
